Pfizer to market sildenafil tablets in its 100,000-milligram tablet pack as Viagra

Astra Pharmaceuticals will begin selling sildenafil tablets, its 100,000-milligram and 200,000-milligram PDE5 inhibitor tablets, in the UK in pharmacies next week.

Pfizer, the maker of the world's leading erectile dysfunction treatment, will offer a £1.75-a-month sildenafil tablet at its online drugstore, Superdrug, in the UK, which is part of Pfizer's £4 billion-a-year business. The £1.75-a-month offer is the latest move by the company to bolster its brand.

"We are very pleased to begin selling sildenafil tablets," said Pfizer's chairman and chief executive, Hank McKinnell.

He added: "These are the high-demand, high-priced, high-value products we can offer to customers who have struggled to get or keep an erection because of ageing or health conditions."

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, which Pfizer's patent on the drug was set to expire this year.

Pfizer said it would be expanding its sildenafil product range to 100,000 and 200,000 tablets. The original sildenafil patent was expiring in June 2020.

But the Viagra 100,000-milligram sildenafil tablet, with a strength of 4.5 mg sildenafil and an internal strength of 4.5 mg sildenafil, is already sold in more than 500 countries and sales of the product have been slow to go. It remains available in the UK for pharmacy and supermarket customers to purchase.

The UK patent on the erectile dysfunction drug has been on for more than a decade and has protected the drug for more than 20 years.

Sales of sildenafil reached £6.6 billion in the first nine months of this year, up 11% from the same period a year earlier.

The erectile dysfunction drug's patent is the result of a legal battle between two key players who were ordered to stop selling the drug under a new drug application from October 2017. The first to challenge the drug's patent was a court in April, when an injunction against Pfizer and its subsidiary in London caused it to shut down sales in the UK.

Mr McKinnell said: "This is a major blow to the pharmaceutical industry because it is the last step in developing a new treatment to help men with erectile dysfunction. The last step is to develop an innovative medicine that is safe and effective. The pharmaceutical industry is facing a huge blow as well as a blow to the healthcare system due to the increasing number of prescriptions for erectile dysfunction treatments.

"As a man of significant ability, I will not be surprised to see the companies launching new medicines to help men suffering from this disease."

Sildenafil tablets are 100,000-milligram and 200,000-milligram

"I would advise customers to order sildenafil 100, 200, and 400 tablets at a time and with the right strength for the intended use," said Mr McKinnell. "Sildenafil tablets are the high-demand, high-priced, high-value products we can offer to customers who have struggled to get or keep an erection because of ageing or health conditions."

The original sildenafil patent was expiring in June 2020, which meant that the drug's patent could begin running amok.

Men can now purchase the drug with a private prescription from their GP or a pharmacist at £1.75 per tablet. Superdrug, a pharmacy and supermarket operator in the UK, will be offering a sildenafil tablet to customers.

Pfizer said it will be expanding its sildenafil product range to 100,000 and 200,000 tablets.
